Correct installation is critical to long-term window and door operation. The following reference-derived principles are an editorial starting point only. The approved product instructions, project drawings, National Construction Code requirements and advice from qualified installers take priority.
The five installation essentials
- Use sufficient, appropriate fixings to secure the product.
- Place packers behind fixing points, especially below sills and behind locks or latches.
- Check that frames are square, plumb and free from twist before final fixing.
- Keep every drainage or weep path open.
- Install suitable flashings and perimeter weatherproofing for the wall system and exposure.
Head, sill and jamb coordination
Allow for the movement and settlement requirements of the surrounding structure. Pack and pre-drill fixing points to suit the frame material, wind classification, fixing type and opening size. Wider or heavier units can require additional support, so do not infer fixing spacing from a smaller opening.
Protect drainage paths
Many products release incidental water through concealed openings below the sill. Mortar, sealant, packers, finishes or debris must not block these paths. Confirm the intended outlet before perimeter sealing and check it again after surrounding trades have finished.
Store and protect products
Keep units upright, dry and supported before installation. Protect aluminium, glass, hardware and reveals from mortar, brick-cleaning chemicals, plaster, welding and grinding debris. Remove temporary wrapping in accordance with approved instructions so films and trapped contaminants do not stain a finished surface.
Verify before handover
Operate every sash, panel, lock and latch. Check clearances, roller or hinge adjustment, seals, drainage, perimeter weatherproofing and visible damage. Record product-specific adjustments and provide the approved care material to the owner. Do not treat this page as a substitute for a project installation guide.
